Nationally known woodturner, Nick Cook lives in Marietta, Georgia, where he owns and operates his studio. He grew up around his father's woodworking equipment and became interested in the art of woodturning in the mid-70s after several years in furniture design and manufacture.

A founding member of the American Association of Woodturners, Nick served six years on the board of directors, including one as vice president.

In addition to creating one-of-a-kind pieces and his staple gift items, Nick teaches and lectures on various woodturning topics, has written articles for several woodworking magazines, and produced two woodturning videos.

The primary materials that he now uses are maple, cocobolo, and tagua nuts. He employs a variety of woods, both domestic and exotic for his one-of-a-kind pieces. Nick's work is marketed in gift shops and galleries from coast to coast and is included in numerous corporate and private collections. Frank Penta Demos

Designing and Turning Laminated Wood Demo by Frank Penta, Saturday, October 29th

Creating laminated wood is simple, enjoyable, and satisfying. It does not require specialized equipment, and turnings made from laminated wood are quite eye catching. Frank will demonstrate how to design laminated blanks for handles, small boxes, bowls, plates, and platters.

    Frank Penta Bio

I have been involved in woodworking for most of my life, and I began to focus specifically on woodturning in 1996. I enjoy creating pieces that are attractive as well as functional. I use fine detailing and careful finishing to enhance the natural beauty of the wood. My one-of-a-kind designs are exhibited in private collections and sold through local galleries. I also sell my work annually through our county’s arts guild, of which I am a member.

I served for six years as the president of the Woodturners Guild of North Carolina and am a founding member of the Chapel Hill Woodturners.

I have been a demonstrator at numerous woodturning clubs and have taught sessions at regional and national symposia. Since 2004, I have been regular woodturning instructor at John C. Campbell Folk School, teaching two to three classes each year. I have also been an instructor at Arrowmont School for Arts and Crafts and the Appalachian Center for Crafts.

My platters were featured in “American Woodturner” journal in the Spring 2005 issue, and my article "Turning and Detailing Platter Bases" appeared in that same issue. I am the author, along with Alan Leland, of Woodturning Tools, Techniques, and Projects.

The two separate food banks are listed because Hickory is in a different region than Winston Salem. As such we have chosen to honor and contribute to both. This decision was made based on a meeting with Second Harvest management to avoid any regional issues. Local advertising is certainly encouraged.
